Twitter is introducing a new qualification to enhance the quality and worth of its Community Notes by requiring participants to rate existing Notes before writing their own.
Everyone who joins Community Notes may rate notes, according to Twitter. They help distinguish useful and unwanted notes, unlocking note-writing. New contributors require a Rating Impact of 5 to write.
Rating Impact measures how frequently a contributor’s ratings assisted the community find ‘Helpful’ or ‘Not Helpful’ remarks. “[Rating Impact] rises when a contributor rates a note before it has a status and when their rating matches the note’s status. When a contributor evaluates a note against its later status, its impact lessens. You’re motivated to evaluate notes early in the process and in a manner that mimics how the Twitter community will score them, which should screen out anyone seeking to influence Community Notes with their own bias.
“To enhance this influence, rate any unrated notes. Browse the ‘Needs Your Help’ tab in Community Notes and watch for rating notifications.
Community Notes authors also get Writing Impact points depending on audience input. Without a high Writing Impact rating, you can’t compose Notes.
So, the method ensures that Community Notes participants aren’t outliers and that their evaluations are valuable to the Twitter community. Which helps guarantee the system isn’t hijacked by someone pushing an agenda, since if most Twitter users don’t find your Notes useful, you can’t keep contributing. It’s a positive upgrade that should help preserve the quality of uploaded notes, however it’s unclear whether it will make the choice a primary moderation filter in the app.
