Reddit experiments with Chat Channels to boost user engagement

Reddit is testing a new feature called Chat Channels that enables real-time, topical conversations among users in selected subreddits. This feature is similar to Chat Rooms, which Reddit launched in 2018 but discontinued in 2020 due to a lack of use.

Reddit claims that it has improved Chat Channels by taking into account the lessons learned from Chat Rooms. It has built the feature with moderators in mind, providing them with dedicated channels to discuss mod-related issues. Additionally, Chat Channels are dedicated spaces for general discussions, sharing random quips, and reactions.

However, given that Reddit’s previous attempts at real-time engagement options, such as Chat Rooms and audio chats, were not successful, some may question whether Chat Channels will be any different. Nonetheless, Reddit is likely testing Chat Channels as a way to encourage more user participation on the platform.

Research shows that only a small percentage of Reddit users (less than 2%) post or comment on the site, while the majority simply browse trending posts. To attract more users and advertisers, Reddit needs to find ways to increase engagement on the platform. Chat Channels could be one such way, although its success remains to be seen.

The feature will first be launched with 25 volunteer communities, with more subreddits added over time if it proves successful.
